How Much Does a 3D Printer Cost to Run from Home?

3D printing is becoming more and more popular, as people are starting to see the potential for this technology. Not only can 3D printers be used for fun projects, but they can also be used for important tasks like creating prototypes or even manufacturing products. If you’re interested in 3D printing, you may be wondering how much it costs to run one. In this blog post, we will discuss the cost of running a 3D printer from home.

Electricity

A 3D printer needs electricity to run and so it will add to your electricity bill but by how much? In general, 3D printers actually use a low amount of electricity and even printing jobs that take around 10hours should only cost around 9 cents give or take. This does depend on how big the printer is and how heated the bed and nozzle get. When looking for a 3D printer, you can look for one with good power consumption.

Materials

Again, the amount you would spend on materials would depend on how much you use the 3D printer, what 3D printer you own, what materials you prefer to use and how big your projects are. Because of this, it is hard to give you an exact amount and could vary quite broadly. If your 3D printer uses a filament it can range from around $18-$180 to restock a 500g-1kg roll. If your 3D printer uses resin it can range greatly from anywhere around $40-$250 for a 500g-1kg bottle. Some filaments and resins provide higher quality models than others so it would depend on what you are making to how much you will need to fork out for the products. If you are printing small things and not very often the filament and resin can last a while but if you are wanting to print large items this may take up the whole roll or bottle or close to it.

3D Printers

3D printers also have a large range in prices depending on what type of 3D printer you are wanting and what you will be using it for. If you are wanting a 3D printer to use as a hobby then you can pick one up for as little as $400 or less depending on the quality you would like to see in your projects. If you are an enthusiast and are wanting a better quality 3D printer, you wouldn’t want to be spending under $1000 and could be looking at a few thousand dollars depending on your preferences. When it comes to professional 3D printers or ones you would use excessively for your business it can range anywhere between $4000 to $20,000+.
